Vintage Conditions

A cooler and slightly wetter than average winter delayed the start of the growing season in Rutherglen, however once it
began the vineyards experienced regular rainfall and warm temperatures throughout the spring. This was followed by warm and dry summer months. The surprising thing about the temperatures during the ripening period was that even though they were slightly up on average, we did not experience any days of extreme heat. This consistently warm weather shortened the
growing season and meant that the time taken for vintage was considered average across our vineyards.
This consistent warm weather enabled the grapes to develop lovely full flavours and that coupled with the fantastic colour means that our red and fortified wines are showing high levels of fruit flavour and character. Our white wines are also looking very good with high levels of texture and fantastic flavour. Vintage 2018 is what winemakers consider to be a ‘consistent’, and therefore highly desirable vintage, that will allow wines to be enjoyed now and well into the future.

Tasting Notes

Arneis is a white variety traditionally grown in Piedmont in the North West of Italy, where it is often blended with the red grape Nebbiolo to ‘soften’ the red wine it produces. With a reputation for being a difficult variety to grow, Arneis loosely translated means ‘little rascal’ in the local dialect. It is becoming increasingly popular
as a white varietal wine both in Italy and in Australia, where in Italy it is referred to ‘Barolo Blanco’. Arneis was the first ‘Italian style’ white wine in our portfolio. Our warm-to-hot days with cool nights help maintain the delightful freshness and crispness that makes Arneis special. Our Arneis has a slightly herbaceous spicy aroma, flavours of almond and pears, a lovely fresh acidity, generous fruit weight on the mid-palate, and a delicate lingering after taste. This wine is becoming one of our favourites.

We fermented the majority of our Arneis juice in stainless steel tanks under conditions that retain maximum fruit flavour. We did ferment 14% in a 5 year Puncheon to help add complexity and palate. After fermentation, the barrel was added back to the tank and a small amount of yeast lees stirring in the tank helps build texture to the mid palate. The wine was left on yeast lees for four months, before bottling.
