Vintage Conditions

Rutherglen Estates 2017 vintage finished 4-6 weeks later than the 2016 vintage due to it being a “favourable” growing season. 2016’s wet winter delayed budburst, and when spring arrived the
rains continued well into October. The result of the rains and mild temperatures meant there was decreased frost pressure and therefore higher disease pressure within the vineyards, which was managed perfectly by our Head Viticulturalist, Matthew Partridge and his vineyard team who delivered healthy, very high quality fruit.
The vine development through flowering, fruit set and veraison
was long and slow. With February the rain stopped and finally the summer sun kicked in, which allowed consistent ripening. Gradually the sugar, colour and acidity developed in perfect harmony.
The 2017 vintage in Rutherglen will produce excellent results for both white and red wines. Bright vibrant fruit characters in the whites, very structured red wines with dark fruit characters, interesting tannin profiles and good length are some of the general features of this year’s vintage.

Tasting Notes

The origin of the ancient white grape Viognier is unknown, with many believing it was imported to France by the Romans in 281AD. By 1965, due to phylloxera and World War I, Viognier was almost extinct, with only 30 acres in France. Since the late 1970’s, its suitability for warm climates has seen plantings grow in France, as well as Italy, Brazil, California and Australia. Our Viognier has flavours of apricot, citrus and spice complemented by toasty, nutty undertones from fermentation and maturation in French oak. It finishes with fresh, crisp acidity and great length.

Winemaking

The Viognier grapes were harvested at two levels of ripeness to maximise the range of varietal flavours and
characters. Due to the exceptional vintage, hand selected barrels of each pick were set aside to produce this ‘Limited Edition’ classic Rhone varietal. To maximise textures and mouthfeel, a portion of the blend was barrel fermented with a 12 month extended maturation period. Lees contact and stirring in barrel has helped develop toasty, nutty undertones to complement flavours of apricot, lychee and ripe pear.
