Young Marsanne loves seafood and lighter meat dishes, such as poached chicken. As it ages it matches well with stronger flavours such as roast chicken and veal

Drinking well now and will develop nicely in the bottle for the next 5-10 years.

Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway like a shot after Rutherglen had received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after its perfect start.

The vines kept up being ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November. From then on, summer was slightly above average temperatures, but dry with perfect ripening conditions. Due to the faster than normal ripening, vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant
warm days, without too many days over 40°C.

In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties.

The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

This wine is made using traditional techniques to maximise the textures that develop with age by the use of extended old-barrel maturation and lees contact. Our Marsanne is made in a ‘full yet tight’ style, with 100% barrel fermentation in large French oak vessels
with some lees stirring. The wine was in barrel for nine months. This complex wine has great fruit length and structure with texture and mouth feel added from the barrel fermentation.

Industry Reviews

Gourmet Traveller Wine - 94 Points

"I loved the touches of hay-like fragrance, toast and complexity from barrel fermentation. The latter has been sensitively used, maintaining a poised overall balance."

Huon Hooke-93/100

"Medium light yellow colour. The bouquet is very attractive, complex, nutty and spicy as well as floral and stone-fruity, the palate likewise lovely to taste, with an array of floral and fruit and spice flavours, enhanced by subtle barrel work. The body is medium and the flavour is intense. Gorgeous wine."

Tony Love - 4 Stars

"This Variety is best known as one of the France's Rhone Valley wonder whites, while it also had considerable success over many years in central Victoria via Tahbilk and Mitchelton. Flexible enough to work in fresher or richer variations, this leans to the latter, with an elusive but satisfying textural feel without losing its minerality and complex flavours, courtesy of 10 months in larger oak vessels."
