Red is perfect for the summer barbecue and loves being teamed with red meat. Try a char-grilled rump steak with caramelised onions and baked jacket potatoes topped with sour cream, or lamb burgers with spicy beetroot relish and a side serve of potato wedges.

1 to 3 years, but excellent for drinking now.

Shiraz [shee-rahz], Durif [dyoor-if; DUR-if]

Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2015 can be best described as having a mild growing season. Spring was dry with temperatures slightly warmer than average and summer temperatures were average to below average for the entire time. Most importantly there were no days of extreme hot weather which is ideal for flavour development. There was a period in late January of high humidity, but careful management of the vines kept the fruit free from disease. The continuing consistent warm days, enabled the vines to ripen the fruit at a consistent rate. This meant there was a reduced need for irrigation which resulted in a very strong vintage for all varieties.

Tasting Notes

Rutherglen Estates Red has been made for wine lovers who enjoy all the qualities that have made Australian red wines so popular. Blended from the two red grape varieties for which Rutherglen is most famous, Shiraz and Durif, Red – in true Rutherglen style – displays big bold flavours and a wonderful depth of colour.

Our Red blend allows the full expression of the wonderful fruit, pepper and spice of Shiraz, with the background of rich Durif, which contributes the blackberry fruit, licorice, aniseed and chocolate characters, as well as firming the tannins for a complete red wine. Our hugely popular Red wine offers enormous value for money. Great colour, dense fruit characters of plum and cherry, with hints of spice and pepper, our Red is a mouthful of rich flavour and juicy tannins.

The Rutherglen region has the soils and climate that allow Shiraz and Durif fruit to ripen evenly and completely, and also develop great aroma and flavour complexity with firm, yet rounded tannins. Selected for their intensity of colour, broad range of flavours and for the balance of the final wine, the Shiraz and Durif for this blend are sourced from different blocks on our vineyards. All batches are chilled and soaked for 48 hours prior to inoculation with a spicy yeast, to encourage the development of bright, fresh berry characters to complement the complexity of fermentation derived characters. The batches are matured separately for six to nine months with a combination of French and American oak, and blending occurs just prior to bottling.

Industry Reviews

"Medium to deep colour with some development. The bouquet is meaty and mellow, earthy and ferrous and quite complex, the palate softly textured and medium-bodied, easy drinking. A hint of ironstone. An excellent drink-now budget red wine. It's rare to find a red with character at this price."
