Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway quickly shot after Rutherglen received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after the perfect start.The vines kept ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November.
From then on, summer featured slightly above average temperatures, and was dry with perfect ripening conditions. Vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant warm days, without too many days over 40°C. In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties. The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

Grown in our Shelley’s Vineyard, these vines have been reaching full maturity over the last few years, and combined with the conditions of the Rutherglen region, are proving to be ideal for producing magnificent white wines from varieties traditionally grown in southern European regions.
The Viognier offers bright stone fruit and honeysuckle floral characters with intense palate weight. Roussanne, which is another aromatic variety, contributes tropical fruits, subtle cashew-like characters with a long and generous acidity. The Marsanne offers citrus characters with very good ageing potential.
These varietals individually hold their own in the wine world, however when combined in the right proportions, this blend is amazingly rich and complex. With a long list of potential descriptors on show which develop and evolve according to wine temperature and age.

This elegant blend is a truly harmonious white wine that has the awards to support the attention it receives.

Winemaking

Our premium white wine was harvested in small batches
and at various levels of ripeness. All batches were fermented
using our indigenous yeast in a combination of new and old
premium French oak hogsheads and puncheons, then allowed
to mature in these barrels for eleven months, minimally stirring
the lees as required to enhance the varieties’ natural textures.
Large oak vessels were used to allow the lovely oak nuances to
complement, but not overpower, each of the varietals’ aromas
and flavours. The blended proportions of each varietal produces
the most complete, balanced and harmonious wine, with the
characteristics of each variety evident and complementary.
