This is the perfect wine to accompany red meat or a spicy casserole, or just a delicious drink on its own. Match Zinfandel with his Italian pork sausages in a tomato concasse or feta and semi-dried tomato crusted lamb.

This wine will develop some lovely leathery characters with age, but ideally should be consumed within 3 to 5 years.

Tasting Notes

While not very common in Australia, Zinfandel is an extremely popular red grape variety in California, where it is often made in a ‘blush’ or rosé style and produces some of the most delicious and berry rich red wines. In Italy it is known as Primitivo.
As a late ripening variety with tight bunches, uneven ripening patterns and thin skins, if not grown in a suitably warm and dry climate, Zinfandel will fail to reach its optimum level of ripeness and can easily develop infections. The Rutherglen climate and conditions, our well drained soils and the exposure of our site make our vineyard a perfect location to produce world-class Zinfandel.

Zinfandel is typically a difficult variety to grow, due to uneven ripening and thin skins. However, the soil, climate, vineyard management and winemaking at Rutherglen Estates matches
beautifully with the Zinfandel. The viticulture team work hard to optimise the fruits’ potential, the loamy soils and warm climate pair well to give the variety every chance to reach full flavour ripeness and
to remain healthy. The winemaking techniques work in harmony with the native aspects of the variety and environment to keep it real. Rutherglen Estates produce only a very small batch of Zinfandel, with only a few thousand bottles released each year, and is treated with great care throughout the winemaking process. The grapes are selectively handpicked and post destemming are cold soaked for two days to optimise the fruit flavour profile in the finished wine. The primary fermentation occurs in small vats which are manually hand-plunged regularly. The finished ferment is manually loaded into the bag press for a very gentle press cycle as to not over extract undesirable characters.

The wine is pressed into oak barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation where it will be left to mature. We use 25-30% new American oak, which supports the structure and flavour profile of the Zinfandel, the other 70-75% maturation is done in second use American, French and Hungarian oak barrels to enhance complexity.

The wine is left in peace to mature for around twenty months in the oak barrels before being lightly filtered prior to bottling to retain as much vitality and originality as possible. The result is a unique wine that proudly represents Zinfandel, Rutherglen the place, Rutherglen Estates and the team behind it. The wine features bright fruit characters with underlying spices and an approachable soft tannin structure.
