Sangiovese loves pizza, pasta and traditional Italian cuisine. Enjoy with a hearty homemade minestrone soup, sprinkled with parmesan cheese together with some crusty white bread. Would also suit a wide range of pre-dinner nibbles such as bruschetta, lightly cured meats and vegetables.

It is drinking nicely now but will cellar nicely for 2 to 5 years.

Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway like a shot after Rutherglen had received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after its perfect start. The vines kept up being ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November.
From then on, summer was slightly above average temperatures, but dry with perfect ripening conditions. Due to the faster than normal ripening, vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant warm days, without too many days over 40°C. In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties. The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

Sangiovese is the most widely planted variety in Italy. The name is believed to be derived from the Latin Sanguis Jovis, meaning ‘the blood of Jupiter’. Most famously, it is the main grape variety used in the Brunello, Chianti and pioneering ‘super Tuscan’ wine blends.
Rutherglen is a very suitable region for Sangiovese, being warm enough to adequately ripen the variety combined with irrigation from the Murray river system to help maintain balance and consistency. As a result we end up with juicy, elegant wines with strong cherry and strawberry varietal characters. Supported by dark earthy notes and fine Sangiovese tannin.

The Rutherglen Estates Sangiovese grapes are coming from a small, low yielding, super-premium estate vineyard. The grapes were harvested, crushed and underwent a two day cold soak before warming and fermenting naturally with indigenous yeast. The wine has been aged in a mix of new and old French, American and Hungarian oak for twelve months to accentuate both the bright cherry notes, as well as the naturally spicy and savoury characters. Most importantly, we find that it enhances the varieties beautiful length of tannin and acid.
