Shiraz is a great match for many styles of food, we prefer grilled or roast beef, especially when served rare or with a peppery sauce. It is also great with hard cheeses such as cheddar.

Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway quickly shot after Rutherglen received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after the perfect start. The vines kept ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November. From then on, summer featured slightly above average temperatures, and was dry with perfect ripening conditions.
Vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant warm days, without too many days over 40°C. In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the
outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties.

Tasting Notes

The Australian wine industry is best known internationally for world class full bodied, fruit driven Shiraz wines. The Shiraz
grape was historically produced around the city of Shiraz in Iran where in around the 9th century had a reputation for producing
some of the finest wines of the middle east, from here it made its way to India, Georgia, France and eventually Australia where
it has continued its tradition of producing fine wines. Rutherglen’s climate and soils offer Shiraz wines of bright plummy fruits with a distinct spicy back palate.

The 2015 Rutherglen Estates Shiraz has vibrant bubbly plum and blackberry fruit aromatics with liquorice and gently toasted
nutmeg like spices supporting the vibrant fruit aromatics. The mouthfeel is soft and balanced with well ripened dark berry fruits combining with green peppery spices and elegant Shiraz tannin. A unique and quite refined version of the typically
gutsy, spicy Rutherglen Shiraz.

Selected from some of the most prized Shiraz vineyards on the estate, the 2015 Shiraz is partially crushed into small,
temperature controlled vats. Ten per cent of the fruit is handpicked and is added to the ferment as whole bunches. This small amount of stems help give a complex tannin structure.

The fruit is cold soaked prior to alcohol fermentation to keep a bright and vibrant fruit profile. A small percentage of Viognier is added to help lift aromatics and freshness which is evident in this vintage! The wine is aged in French and American oak to give tightness and roundness on the palate whilst helping to give complexity in all areas.
