Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2015 can be best described as having a mild growing season. Spring was dry with temperatures slightly warmer than average and summer temperatures were average to below average for the entire time. Most importantly there were no days of extreme hot weather which is ideal for flavour development. There was a period in late January of high humidity, but careful management of the vines kept the fruit free from disease. The continuing consistent warm days, enabled the vines to ripen the fruit at a consistent rate. This meant there was a reduced need for irrigation which resulted in a very strong vintage for all varieties.
Both white wines and red wines showed fantastic depth of flavour and finesse with the added bonus being our reds having intense colour and tannins.
One to watch!

Tasting Notes

Grown in our Shelley’s Vineyard, these vines have been reaching full maturity over the last few years, and combined with the conditions of the Rutherglen region, are proving to be ideal for producing magnificent white wines from varieties traditionally grown in southern European regions.
The Viognier offers bright stone fruit and honeysuckle floral characters with intense palate weight. Roussanne, which is another aromatic variety, contributes tropical fruits, subtle cashew-like characters with a long and generous acidity. The Marsanne offers citrus characters with very good ageing potential.
These varietals individually hold their own in the wine world, however when combined in the right proportions, this blend is amazingly rich and complex. With a long list of potential descriptors on show which develop and evolve according to wine temperature and age.
A fantastic food wine to match an erray of dishes.
This elegant blend is a truly harmonious white wine that has the awards to support the attention it receives.

Our premium white wine was harvested in small batches
and at various levels of ripeness. All batches were fermented
using our indigenous yeast in a combination of new and old
premium French oak hogsheads and puncheons, then allowed
to mature in these barrels for eleven months, minimally stirring
the lees as required to enhance the varieties’ natural textures.
Large oak vessels were used to allow the lovely oak nuances to
complement, but not overpower, each of the varietals’ aromas
and flavours. The blended proportions of each varietal produces
the most complete, balanced and harmonious wine, with the
characteristics of each variety evident and complementary.

Gourmet Traveller Wine- 95 Points

"I loved the honeysuckle and honey flavour on the nose, the rich yet fine flavours, and the immaculate balance and length. This wine shows the Rutherglen region's potential with these grape varieties.

Huon Hooke- 95 Points

Deep yellow, bright colour; nutty, smoky bouquet revealing barrel-ferment as well as savoury fruit interactions. Some sulfidey lees notes. The palate is restrained and dry, savoury and fine. Lush flavour emerged as it warmed. Good length, lovely silken texture. It's eerily like a funky chardonnay.

Toni Paterson- 93 Points

A heady nose with hints of honey, stone fruits and lemon. The palate is even and harmonious with the three varieties in perfect harmony. Although it is a sweet-fruited style, it also has a savoury element plus a touch of refreshing melon and sweet lemon. The palate finishes with gentle warming spice.

Matthew Jukes

"I will start this tasting note with a list of percentages. Take note, they are all important statistics in explaining how this wine was made and also why it tastes like it does! The blend is made up of 55% Viognier, 25% Roussanne and 20% Marsanne and the oak regime is a very well thought out 43% new, 19% 1-year-old, 19% 3-year-old and 19% 5-year-old barrel amalgam. In taste terms this means that Roussanne and Marsanne just about match the Viognier element and this is crucial. Viognier can run away with itself – the peachy note can be too much if they are not tempered. Roussanne and Marsanne bookend the exuberant Viognier with leaner citrus note coming from the Roussanne and honey and muscle coming from Marsanne. The result is a perfectly proportioned supermodel. If you then add a discreet amount of new oak to lift and highlight the aromatic elements further and leave the rest of the old barrels to underpin the exuberance, you have a statuesque wine. All of this mathematics is pointless unless the flavours stack up. I can tell you that this is the finest Rutherglen VRM I have ever tasted and by comparison the wine made from similar varieties back in the Rhône Valley in France, nothing gets close to this shimmering, succulent beauty."
