Fiano is a good Italian and loves food. Our Fiano is the perfect accompaniment with rich, creamy dishes. Try a creamy chicken, bacon, pea and spinach pasta, or chicken saltimbocca with creamy polenta.

Superb for drinking now, but can cellar nicely for up to 3 years.

Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway like a shot after Rutherglen had received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after its perfect start.

The vines kept up being ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November. From then on, summer was slightly above average temperatures, but dry with perfect ripening conditions. Due to the faster than normal ripening, vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant
warm days, without too many days over 40°C.

In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties.

The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

Fiano is one of southern Italy’s most famous white grape varieties. It has been grown for over two thousand years in the volcanic hills surrounding the town of Avellino, east of Naples, in the Campania region of south west Italy. Rutherglen Estates is one of only a dozen vineyards currently growing Fiano in Australia.

Most Italian white grape varieties are grown to produce wine to be enjoyed with food, and Fiano is no exception. This distinctive wine is subtle in flavour and aroma, yet displays a delicate richness of texture to perfectly enhance heavy pasta and seafood dishes with its fresh acidic finish.

Our Fiano displays hints of citrus, pear and hazelnuts, with a lovely supple texture, we are excited about the variety’s future in Rutherglen.
