Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2014 was relatively interesting and after frost early in the season, it panned out quite well for both our white and red wines. Spring saw average weather conditions followed by a hot, dry spell during late summer. The early frost decreased our yields but careful management of the vines including timely watering during a particularly hot period in late January, kept the vines stress free and in excellent condition.

Tasting Notes

Shiraz is one of the world’s oldest known wine grape varieties. In the modern age, it is the main variety used in the celebrated wines of Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie from the Rhône region of France. More recently it has established Australia’s reputation in the wine world.

We co-ferment a small portion of Viognier fruit with our Shiraz in the traditional Côte-Rôtie style to enhance colour, flavour and tannin structure. The wine is a rich red with a violet hue, aromas of blackberry and spicy pepper with complex, lingering ripe fruit characters and hints of chocolate, licorice and cedar oak characters.

Winemaking

Our Shiraz was crushed and chilled to capture the bright red fruit characters of the variety. Approximately 2% of the total volume of the wine is from ‘wet’ Viognier skins, added prior to fermentation with a spicy Rhone origin yeast. Fermentation was at a moderately cool temperature (25ºC) to maintain fruit freshness and varietal characters. The wine remained on skins for up to ten days before being pressed to a combination of new and old American, Hungarian and French oak, for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 12 months.

"Medium to deep colour with some development. The bouquet is meaty and mellow, earthy and ferrous and quite complex, the palate softly textured and medium-bodied, easy drinking. A hint of ironstone. An excellent drink-now budget red wine. It's rare to find a red with character at this price."
