Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway like a shot after Rutherglen had received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after its perfect start. The vines kept up being ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November. From then on, summer was slightly above average temperatures, but dry with perfect ripening conditions. Due to the faster than normal ripening, vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant warm days, without too many days over 40°C. In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties. The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

Arneis is a white variety traditionally grown in Piedmont in the north east of Italy, where it is often blended with the red grape Nebbiolo to ‘soften’ the red wine it produces. With a reputation for being a difficult variety to grow, Arneis loosely translated means ‘little rascal’ in the local dialect. It is becoming increasingly popular as a white varietal wine both in Italy and in Australia, where in Italy it is referred to ‘Barolo Blanco’.  Arneis was the first ‘Italian style’ white wine in our portfolio. Our warm-to-hot days with cool nights help maintain the delightful  freshness and crispness that makes Arneis special. Our Arneis has a slightly herbaceous spicy aroma, flavours of almond and pears, a lovely fresh acidity, generous fruit weight on the mid-palate, and a delicate lingering after taste. This wine is becoming one of our favourites.

We fermented the majority of our Arneis juice in stainless steel tanks under conditions that retain maximum fruit flavour. We did ferment 14% in a 5 year Puncheon to help add complexity and palate. After

fermentation, the barrel was added back to the tank and a small amount of yeast lees stirring in the tank helps build texture to the mid palate. The wine was left on yeast lees for four months, before bottling.
