Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2014 was relatively interesting and after frost early in the season, it panned out quite well for both our white and red wines. Spring saw average weather conditions followed by a hot, dry spell during late summer. The early frost decreased our yields but careful management of the vines including timely watering during a particularly hot period in late January, kept the vines stress free and in excellent condition.

Tasting Notes

Savagnin is a controversial variety in the Australian wine industry where all plantings were supposedly Albarino. A mix-up occurred when the CSIRO originally received the incorrect variety into their vine collection. Savagnin is a rare variety that is grown in the Jura region of France, believed to be a mutation of Traminer, and traditionally used to make vin jaune, a type of sherry. Our particular clone has a Spanish influence, as it was grown there for over 40 years.

After pioneering the way with this ‘new’ varietal, we are exceptionally pleased that Rutherglen is proving to be the perfect environment for it to flourish. Our Savagnin is fruity and crisp, with fresh floral aromas. A vibrant palate of pear, honeysuckle and lemon zest, along with wonderfully subtle savoury heath and and herbal flavours. Our Savagnin has a lovely citrus finish with good length and balance.

The flavour profile of Savagnin developed well again in our Rutherglen vineyards this year. We fermented the Savagnin juice in stainless steel to retain fruit and maintain the maximum amount of flavour. The wine was cleaned up and bottled as quickly as possible to retain the maximum amount of its natural freshness and finess.
