Sangiovese loves pizza, pasta and traditional Italian cuisine. Enjoy with a hearty homemade Minestrone soup, sprinkled with parmesan cheese together with some crusty white bread.

It is drinking nicely now but will cellar nicely for 2 to 5 years.

Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2015 can be best described as having a mild growing season. Spring was dry with temperatures slightly warmer than average and summer temperatures were average to below average for the entire time. Most importantly there were no days of extreme hot weather which is ideal for flavour development. There was a period in late January of high humidity, but careful management of the vines kept the fruit free from disease. The continuing consistent warm days, enabled the vines to ripen the fruit at a consistent rate. This meant there was a reduced need for irrigation which resulted in a very strong vintage for all varieties.

Tasting Notes

Sangiovese is the most widely planted variety of all Italian varieties, both in Italy and in the ‘new world’. It’s name is believed to be derived from the Latin Sanguis Jovis, meaning ‘the blood of Jove (Jupiter)’. Most famously, it is the main grape variety used in the famous Brunello, Chianti and pioneering ‘super Tuscan’ wine blends.
Rutherglen is a very suitable region for Sangiovese, being warm enough to adequately ripen the variety, and in the best years producing juicy, yet elegant wines with varietal character. Sour cherry on the nose and palate, as well as the earthy, truffle-like characters associated with the best traditional Italian wines.
Our Sangiovese is tightly structured, with a particularly savoury and earthy complexity, soft cherry flavours, and lingering acidity.

In making this wine, one hectare of our lowest yielding vines from of our Sangiovese block was crushed and cold soaked for 24 hours in a mix of small static and open fermenters, before being warmed and self inoculated with a native yeast strain. The wine has been aged in a mix of new and old French, American and Hungarian oak for twelve months to accentuate both the bright cherry notes, and the naturally spicy and savoury characters. Most importantly, we find that it enhances the varieties beautiful
length of tannin and acid.

Industry Reviews

Wine Business Magazine

"Cracking drink this. It's heady in warm, red berry fruitiness, ashy oak character, sweet spice, faint herbs. The palate shows that enticing 'brick dust' tannin profile amongst breathy, red-fruit sweetness. It's spot on at medium weight, but also feels quite generous. Righteous with pizza."
