Vintage Conditions

Rutherglen had the most consistent growing season for many years in 2013. The spring saw regular rainfall events and mild temperatures. The soil profile was wet after a good winter and the vineyards had a great start with very little disease pressure. There was virtually no rain from mid December until mid March and although the temperatures were higher than average there were very few days over 40 degrees. This meant we could control the amount of water the vines received. By holding off watering until Christmas the vines became balanced without excess growth and then the judicial use of irrigation after Christmas helped to keep the vines functioning well whist ensuring small healthy grapes, which led to intense full flavoured wines. One to savour!

Tasting Notes

Our Burgoyne’s Vineyards provide all the Shiraz grapes at Rutherglen Estates. Early last century Peter Burgoyne had a vision to make Rutherglen the leading winegrowing centre in Australia. He exported 2,700 ‘hogsheads’ (200,000 gallons) of full-bodied wine  a month to England. We are proud to name our Mourvedre, Shiraz Grenache Burgoyne’s Block after the vision of this wine pioneer.
Mourvedre is rarely the dominant variety in these traditional ‘Rhone’ blends but the colour, power, structure and intensity of flavour that our Rutherglen Mourvedre displays allows us to make a unique ‘twist’ to this traditional blend, adding an extra gamey and rich dimension to the Shiraz and Grenache. Shiraz offers lovely berry fruit, pepper and colour richness, while Grenache is the strawberry, candy, vanilla and spicy support variety.
This wine is elegant and has a fragrant delicate aroma of cherries, strawberries with floral notes and spice.  It has red berries on the palate is medium weight with mouth coating fine chalky tannins.

The three varieties of this traditional blend are harvested within days of each other and handled separately until just prior to bottling. With the aim of producing a varietal fresh and fruity wine each batch is crushed then allowed to soak at approximately 10ºC for 48 hours before being inoculated with a spicy Rhone yeast. Ferments start cool but are allowed to warm up to approx 27ºC during the peak period of fermentation. The wine was blended and allowed to mature in older French and American oak hogsheads and puncheons for 3 months.
