Rutherglen Estates 2007 Estate Durif has been awarded a gold medal and two trophies at the 2009 Rutherglen Wine Show.
The wine was awarded a gold medal in the Durif class, plus a trophy for Best North Eastern District Dry Red Wine Not Exceeding Three Years of Age (Best North East Red) and the RL Seppelt Perpetual Trophy for Best District Dry Red One or Two Years Old (Best Rutherglen Red).
“We are very honoured to receive this latest award, especially for Durif, the cornerstone varietal of Rutherglen, and of our range,” said Winemaker, Marc Scalzo (pictured with Matthew Partridge (left) on the home page).
Rutherglen Estates deliberately pick their Durif at varying stages of ripeness to maximise flavours and aromas, and produce a well balanced and structured wine. The 2007 vintage has an incredible depth of colour, with intense varietal berry, liquorice and prune notes.
“Despite the limited rainfall in 2007, we were very happy with the results of the Durif. It’s gratifying to have achieved this at the Rutherglen Wine Show when the quality of Durif and other red wines produced amongst the wineries of the region is so high.”
Durif is recognised as Rutherglen’s icon variety and is celebrating 101 years in 2009. The Rutherglen region is recognised as being the home of Durif in Australia; the wines produced combining an intensity of aromas and flavours not seen in other regions of the world.
In addition to this gold medal and trophies, the Rutherglen Estates 2007 Durif has also been awarded two silver medals and numerous other medals and reviews across the country.
