Vintage Conditions

Rutherglen Estates 2017 vintage finished 4-6 weeks later than the 2016 vintage due to it being a “favourable” growing season. 2016’s wet winter delayed budburst, and when spring arrived the rains continued well into October. The result of the rains and mild temperatures meant there was decreased frost pressure and therefore higher disease pressure within the vineyards, which was managed perfectly by our head vitaculturalist, Matthew Partridge and his vineyard team who delivered healthy, very high quality fruit.
The vine development through flowering, fruit set and veraison was long and slow. With February the rain dried out and finally the summer sun kicked in, which allowed consistent ripening. Gradually the sugar, colour and acidity developed in perfect harmony. The 2017 vintage in Rutherglen will produce excellent results for both white and red wines. Bright vibrant fruit characters in the whites, very structured red wines with dark fruit characters, interesting tannin profiles and good length are some of the general features of this year’s vintage.

Tasting Notes

It is believed that the Muscat grape has been growing in Europe for over two thousand years. Our light delicate fortified Muscat is made in a style more commonly seen in some sweet European wine styles.

In keeping with the traditional earlier harvested style, our pale gold BdV Muscat is highly aromatic, has lovely floral hints of rose and musk, and a delicately light, yet sweet palate with lingering flavours of turkish delight. We have produced only a small quantity of this most refreshing sticky.

Produced from the same Brown Muscat (Muscat a Petit Grains Rouge) used for traditional fortified Muscat styles. The carefully selected fruit for this wine was harvested early, before raisining had commenced in the berries. This helps to retain and promote the integrity of the varietal characters.
The fruit is then lightly pressed to retain a vibrant fruit profile. The clean juice was fermented at low temperatures in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks using  a highly aromatic yeast. The juice is fermented until desired sweetness balance is achieved. The fermentation is then stopped and a small amount of neutral alcohol was added to reach the perfect sweetness/alcohol balance. This offers an aromatic, delicate fortified style wine.
The end result is a balanced wine that pairs well with many light deserts.
A fantastic alternative for people who find the classic Rutherglen fortified's a bit heavy!
