fiano white wine rutherglen

Per Bottle
Case Of 6

Fiano is a good Italian and loves food. Our Fiano is the perfect accompaniment with rich, creamy dishes. Try a creamy chicken, bacon, pea and spinach pasta, or chicken saltimbocca with creamy polenta.

Superb for drinking now, but can cellar nicely for up to 3 years.

Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2017 was an ideal vintage. Rutherglen has experienced a long, mild and dry summer, and an early autumn. This is often referred to as an Indian summer. The vines have loved this and have been able to ripen the fruit in a slow and orderly fashion.

This slow ripening is extremely desirable as the fruit is able to ripen in a consistent fashion, which results in each variety being due for picking in an orderly fashion, instead of multiple varieties all being due for harvesting at the same time. In the winery this allows us to give maximum amounts of love and attention to each variety as it passes through, whilst also giving us time to experiment with any smaller batches to increase the overall quality of the wines.

By doing all of this we have seen the fruit and resultant wines showing and retaining their natural acidity whilst also having large amounts of fruit flavour and character. Vintage 2017 will be one of those years that we will talk about as being a “normal” vintage, and we will be enjoying these wines well into the future.

Tasting Notes

The Fiano grape comes from the Southern Italian region of Campania close to Naples where it is best known for the
‘DOCG’ Fiano di Avellina wine. Records date back as far as the middle ages for this grape where it was well documented Charles D’anjou, the King of Naples at the time was so much in love with the Fiano variety he had 16,000 plants in his royal vineyards.
Fast forward two thousand years and Fiano has made its way to the McLaren Vale, Rutherglen, Argentina and even the Rioja
in Spain. Fiano is a variety gathering a very strong following internationally due to its quite particular creamy nutty, herbaceous texture that integrates well with the fruit profile of the wine. This relatively low yielding variety is growing in popularity also due to its ability to adapt to a wide range of wine growing regions around the world. The 2016 Rutherglen Estates Fiano has soft hazelnut and bright celery-like green vegetable notes with underlying vanilla spice aromas. The palate has beautiful soft texture, soft hazelnuts with underlying, slightly astringent citrus notes. A wine that is drinking beautifully now, but has good cellaring potential of at least five years.

The 2018 Fiano was fermented in first use large French oak barrels. Following fermentation the Fiano was then aged in
second use barrels for a brief maturation period. The barrel fermentation and short ageing of the Fiano has helped to retain the typical Fiano soft texture, whilst not interfering with the bright zesty fruit profile.
