Vintage Conditions

Rutherglen Estates 2017 vintage finished 4-6 weeks later than the 2016 vintage due to it being a “favourable” growing season. 2016’s wet winter delayed budburst, and when spring arrived
the rains continued well into October. The result of the rains and mild temperatures meant there was decreased frost pressure and therefore higher disease pressure within the vineyards, which was
managed perfectly by our Head Viticulturalist, Matthew Partridge and his vineyard team who delivered healthy, very high quality fruit.
The vine development through flowering, fruit set and veraison was long and slow. With February the rain stopped and finally the summer sun kicked in, which allowed consistent ripening. Gradually the sugar, colour and acidity developed in perfectharmony.
The 2017 vintage in Rutherglen will produce excellent results for both white and red wines. Bright vibrant fruit characters in the whites, very structured red wines with dark fruit characters, interesting tannin profiles and good length are some of the general features of this year’s vintage.

Tasting Notes

Savagnin is a controversial variety in the Australian wine industry where all plantings were supposedly Albarino (a white grape predominantly grown in North West Spain and Portugal closely related to Riesling and Petit Manseng). A mix-up occurred when the CSIRO originally received the incorrect variety into their vine collection. Savagnin is a rare variety that is grown in the Jura region of France, believed to be a mutation of Traminer, and traditionally used to make Vin Jaune, a type of sherry.

Our particular clone has a Spanish influence, as it was grown there for over 40 years. After pioneering the way with this ‘new’ varietal, we are exceptionally pleased that Rutherglen is proving to be the perfect environment for it to flourish. Savagnin is typically a late-ripening white variety which suits the warm climate of Rutherglen.

Our Savagnin is fruity and crisp, with fresh floral and bright grapefruit-like aromas. A vibrant palate of pear, honeysuckle and
lemon zest, along with wonderfully subtle savoury heath and and herbal flavours. Our Savagnin has a lovely citrus finish with good length and balance.

The flavour profile of Savagnin developed well again in our Rutherglen vineyards this year. We fermented the Savagnin juice in
temperature controlled stainless steel to retain fruit and maintain the maximum amount of flavour. The wine was bottled as quickly as possible to retain the maximum amount of its natural freshness and fineness.
