Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway quickly shot after Rutherglen received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after the perfect start.The vines kept ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November.
From then on, summer featured slightly above average temperatures, and was dry with perfect ripening conditions. Vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant warm days, without too many days over 40°C. In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties. The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

Tempranillo is considered to be the noble grape of Spain, as it is the backbone of wines made in the well-known northern regions of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. It was traditionally used as a blending partner for Grenache and Shiraz. The name Tempranillo comes from the Spanish word “temprano”, which translates to “little early one”, in reference to its short growing season and early ripening. With many regional synonyms, it is also known as Tinto Fino, Valdepenas and Tinta Roriz (Portugal).
Tempranillo is flourishing in our Rutherglen vineyards, as this early ripening variety is traditionally grown in a similar warm climate. This vibrant and aromatic varietal offers aromas of warm spices, crushed red fruits and the classic elements of tobacco. On the palate elements of berry fruit, a cherry compote finish with mouth-filling grainy tannins.


Our Tempranillo is showing great potential in the vineyard. The wine was fermented in a small static fermenter using a gentle pump over regime to optimise the grapes fantastic grainy tannins whilst preserving its spicy berry flavours.
After 21 days on skins the wine was pressed and matured in a mix of used American and French hogsheads and puncheons for 16 months to add subtle cedar flavours and round out the tannins.
