Vintage Conditions

Rutherglen Estates 2017 vintage finished 4-6 weeks later than the 2016 vintage due to it being a “favourable” growing season. 2016’s wet winter delayed budburst, and when spring arrived the rains continued well into October. The result of the rains and mild temperatures meant there was decreased frost pressure and therefore higher disease pressure within the vineyards, which was managed perfectly by our head vitaculturalist, Matthew Partridge and his vineyard team who delivered healthy, very high
quality fruit.
The vine development through flowering, fruit set and veraison was long and slow. With February the rain dried out and finally the summer sun kicked in, which allowed consistent ripening. Gradually the sugar, colour and acidity developed in perfect harmony. The 2017 vintage in Rutherglen will produce excellent results for both white and red wines. Bright vibrant fruit characters in the whites, very structured red wines with dark fruit characters, interesting tannin profiles and good length are some of the general features of this year’s vintage.

Tasting Notes

Our white is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, a variety which is more commonly known for being grown in cooler climates.
Our version of this white is fresh and herbaceous while having a mouth filling mid-palate.
It supplies the typical Sauvignon Blanc varietal cut grass and gooseberry with tropical fruit aromas.
The palate is fresh and crisp as you would expect from Sauvignon Blanc, yet has a slightly buttery mouth-filling mid-palate that gives the pronounced freshness and zestiness a supported textural backbone.
A perfect white for any occasion.

We have three different Sauvignon Blanc clones planted in the vineyard. The grapes were picked in February to capture the maximum amount of fresh herbaceous flavours, and were harvested in the cool of the night and handled gently with non-oxidative winemaking techniques and cool temperatures at every stage. The wine was 100% fermented in stainless steel tanks to ensure it has maintained all of its varietal freshness, crispness and great acidity.
