Fiano is a good Italian and loves food. Our Fiano is the perfect accompaniment with rich, creamy dishes. Try a creamy chicken, bacon, pea and spinach pasta, or chicken saltimbocca with creamy polenta.

Superb for drinking now, but can cellar nicely for up to 3 years.

Vintage Conditions

Vintage 2015 can be best described as having a mild growing season. Spring was dry with temperatures slightly warmer than average and summer temperatures were average to below average for the entire time. Most importantly there were no days of extreme hot weather which is ideal for flavour development. There was a period in late January of high humidity, but careful management of the vines kept the fruit free from disease. The continuing consistent warm days, enabled the vines to ripen the fruit at a consistent rate. This meant there was a reduced need for irrigation which resulted in a very strong vintage for all varieties. Both white wines and red wines showed fantastic depth of flavour and finesse with the added bonus being our reds having intense colour and tannins. One to watch!

Tasting Notes

Fiano is one of southern Italy’s most famous white grape varieties. It has been grown for over two thousand years in the volcanic hills surrounding the town of Avellino, east of Naples, in the Campania region of south west Italy. Rutherglen Estates is one of only a dozen vineyards currently growing Fiano in Australia.

Most Italian white grape varieties are grown to produce wine to be enjoyed with food, and Fiano is no exception. This distinctive wine is subtle in flavour and aroma, yet displays a delicate richness of texture to perfectly enhance heavy pasta and seafood dishes with its fresh acidic finish.

Our Fiano displays hints of citrus, pear and hazelnuts, with a lovely supple texture, we are excited about the variety’s future in Rutherglen.

The 2015 Fiano was fermented in second use large French oak
barrels. Following fermentation the Fiano was then aged in second and third use barrels for an extended maturation period.
The barrel fermentation and ageing of the Fiano has helped to retain the typical Fiano soft texture, whilst the post fermentation barrel topping program has contributed to retain the bright zesty fruit profile of the wine.

Industry Reviews

Toni Paterson (86/100)

"Intense and perfumed fruity top notes. The rich and textured mid-palate is a mix of savoury and sweet flavours with gentle nuttiness and warming spice on the finish. Good depth of flavour." 2017-06-19
