Vintage Conditions

The 2016 growing season got underway like a shot after Rutherglen had received average winter rainfall, whilst most of the rest of Victoria received very little rain. Budburst was normal, however October was 6°C above average and the vines grew strongly after its perfect start. The vines kept up being ahead of the average schedule with a fine, dry October and November. From then on, summer was slightly above average temperatures, but dry with perfect ripening conditions. Due to the faster than normal ripening, vintage started slightly early but finished four weeks earlier than average - it was a very compressed vintage. There were constant warm days, without too many days over 40°C. In summary, the season was ideal for growing grapes and the outcome is an above average year in Rutherglen for most varieties. The reds in particular look strong.

Tasting Notes

The Muscat grape is the world’s oldest known grape variety, believed to be grown in Europe for over two thousand years and used to make many different styles of wine.

Our Moscato is made in the traditional Italian frizzante style, and bottled under pressure with a crown seal to retain freshness and fizz. Our fresh, pink, fruity wine is highly aromatic and has lovely grapey sorbet like aromas with hints of summer berries and rose. It has a delicately light, yet sweet palate with refreshing lively bubbles and lingering floral fruit flavours.

Our Moscato was produced from the same Brown Muscat (Muscat a Petit Grains Rouge), used for more traditional Rutherglen Muscat styles. The fruit for this wine was harvested early, whilst the berries were still fresh and plump, to enable us to maintain a fresh fruity flavour profile. To enhance and promote the delicate nature of the varietal characters only the lightest pressed juice was selected and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel, with a highly aromatic yeast. Once the wine had fermented to the required level of residual sweetness, it was chilled to stop fermentation. The wine was then quickly filtered and bottled to maintain all of the natural fresh Muscat flavours of the grapes.
